The capacity of a communications channel.

The term derives from analogue transmission in which the bandwidth of a transmitted communications signal is a measure of the range of frequencies the signal occupies.

In analogue systems bandwidth is measured in cycles per second (hertz).

In digital systems bandwidth refers to data speed in binary digits or bits per second (bps).
