Chunghwa Telecom in Taiwan has ordered 10,000 additional licenses of Orca RiGHTv IPTV middleware to accommodate growth in one of the world’s largest internet protocol TV deployments.

It is the second expansion requested from Orca within less than six months, bringing the total number of Orca middleware licenses at Chunghwa to 40,000. The number of subscribers is projected to reach 1.5 million within five years.

The Chunghwa operation is the largest commercial IPTV deployment for broadcast television and video on demand in the Asia Pacific region. Alcatel and Acer are providing the end-to-end system integration.

“Phase 2 of the MOD service is expected to gain us 300,000 more subscribers in 2005,” said Mr. Ho-Chan Tan, chairman of Chunghwa Telecom. “We are planning to gradually extend the service to the central and southern part of Taiwan in the first half year.”

“Deploying IPTV services for our customers with an end-user experience that is exactly tuned to the local media culture gives us the unique advantage we need to stay ahead of the competition,” continued the chairman. “Moving into the video space allows us to investigate new and interesting service offerings to retain and grow our customer base.”
