UKTV is updating its interactive channel guide to provide searchable programme listings and text alerts. The new services are being provided in partnership with DITG and Broadsystem.

The UKTV interactive service on the Sky satellite platform, which previously provided details of current and following programmes across the suite of UKTV channels, is being extended to enable users to view schedules for up to six hours ahead.

The latest release of the UKTV interactive application will also allow users to perform keyword searches of programme listings. Users will be charged 15p per minute to maintain an online connection via the return path while searching.

By entering their mobile phone number, users will also be able to receive a text message alert half an hour before a programme starts. This service will be provided by Broadsystem.

Paul Robinson, UKTV’s editor of digital services said: “Two of our key objectives at UKTV are offering choice to our viewers and demonstrating innovation. The latest developments to our red button service clearly demonstrate both. We are confident the services will become an invaluable tool when our viewers are choosing what to watch.”

Neil MacDonald, managing director of DITG, added: “We are increasingly able to harness ever-advancing innovation and creativity to traditional television. As a result, UKTV has provided its audience with a service that enhances its viewing experience and therefore builds loyalty to its channels.”

One of the key objectives of the service is to make viewers more aware of the range of programming available across the UKTV channels and to keep them within the channel portfolio. The red button interactive service promotes details of programmes on all the UKTV channels. However, Sky’s rules currently preclude direct selection of the channels, preventing other companies from providing full electronic programme guide services.

UKTV provides nine themed channels and is a commercial joint venture between BBC Worldwide and Flextech Television, the content division of Telewest Communications.
