We’ve seen a number of televisions that claim to respond to voice and gestures but have yet to see this work well and remain unconvinced that people really want to talk to or wave at their television. Yet the traditional television remote control is a terribly limiting form of user interaction. With over one and a half billion smartphones and a quarter of a billion tablets expected to be in use worldwide this year, the best user interface may already be to hand. There are apps that can control your television or your set-top box, but generally not both. It may take Apple or Google to crack it, but I hope that this year someone will simply make television easier to use.
