As Mobile World Congress delegates converge on Barcelona, the latest figures from the GSMA show there are currently 4.7 billion people with a mobile phone, with smartphones accounting for 45% of them. The number of people with a mobile is forecast to increase to 5.6 billion by 2020, or seven out of ten people on the planet. Most of the growth is expected in developing markets. There are already a billion 4G mobile connections worldwide and the number is predicted to account for a third of all mobile connections by 2020. The amount of video viewed on handheld displays is only going to rise, as is the quality. It’s not all going to be delivered over cellular networks, where it will account for 70% of all traffic. The user expectation will be that video viewed on a personal screen will be as good as television, if not better.
