Nearly a quarter of a billion television sets will be sold worldwide this year. A similar number of tablets may be sold, while there will be four or five times as many new smartphones. The communal experience of television has historically been a product of its technology. For some people the television experience will continue to be defined by a large shared screen in their living room. These days video can also be much more personal, more like a book or magazine. For some, the most important screen may be one they can hold in their hand. Many will want to view different screens, according to context. This has important implications for how we think of the future of television and video programming and services.
