Young adults in the United Kingdom are watching less television than five years ago, although they are using the television screen more for other things. Yet the World Cup has produced record audiences. The coverage of the semi-final between England and Croatia on ITV had an average audience of 20.2 million, with the match itself watched by an average of 24.3 million, an 81% audience share. It was the highest football audience for a single channel in the United Kingdom, attracting a larger audience than the opening and closing ceremonies of the London 2012 Olympics. The peak audience over a minute was 26.6 million. The match also had 4.3 million requests on ITV Hub, the highest yet for live online programming.
