Phone votes may be justified by programme producers as a form of audience participation but they are clearly also an important revenue stream to subsidise their shows. If producers are really interested in the views of the viewers and wish to restore their trust, perhaps they could consider using standard rather than premium rate phone tariffs. This is common practice in many countries. It seems extraordinary that the BBC is continuing to promote premium rate phone votes as part of its programme formats having recently pledged to suspend all such competitions.
