Every week I write to you and every week thousands of you are kind enough to respond by reading this newsletter. When was the last time a broadcaster wrote to you about a programme you might want to watch? My pay-television provider emails me regularly, which is more than can be said for many public service broadcasters. This week BBC Three will cease television transmissions and go online only. Could this be the start of a trend, like newspapers dropping their print editions? It’s one thing to put programmes online. It’s quite another to create an online-only channel, whatever that means. So far it seems to mean a web page with ‘new stuff every day’ along with posts on social media. Even the new logo appears to be beyond parody. Over 300,000 people signed a petition to keep BBC Three on air. It will be interesting to see how many stay with it online.
