The death of the author and broadcaster Clive James after a long illness was not unexpected but was widely reported, such was the regard for his work. His witty writing about television made me and many others appreciate that this was a popular medium that could also be considered critically as a cultural form. His programmes on television also proved popular, introducing viewers to the unintentional humour of programmes from around the world before the web made such memes possible. He was also a serious writer and poet, despite being most remembered for his work on television.
