The television environment is evolving rapidly. Some time ago we coined the phrase ‘broadband meets broadcast’ to describe the convergence of these digital networks. In the United Kingdom, one of the most advanced markets for digital television, few could see the business sense in cable and broadband provider NTL acquiring the leading commercial channel ITV, but satellite television operator Sky, which has also been investing in broadband, clearly perceived a competitive threat. Meanwhile, Channel 4 has become the first major broadcaster to make the majority of its programming available for download and other channels are expected to follow. BT Vision is finally about to launch its hybrid broadband and broadcast service and now TiVo offers access to broadband programming. We have continuing coverage of the unfolding story of the future of television on informitv.
