With services apparently shedding millions of subscribers, anyone might think pay-television is falling off a cliff. Five years ago, the informitv Multiscreen Index reported that the top 10 services in the United States had a total of 87.92 million television subscribers. The January 2020 edition shows that although the constituents may have changed, the top 10 still have 78.73 million. That is a 10.5% loss, which is substantial but so far not catastrophic. Europe, the Middle East and Africa showed only its second quarterly loss in that period, although for the first time Sky, now part of Comcast, lost subscribers. The Multiscreen Index is required reading for those that want to see the bigger picture.
