Transport for London has launched a public transport information service for the capital on interactive television with a two year pilot project in partnership with broadcaster BSkyB.

Available through the Sky Active interactive TV entertainment portal, Londoners will be able to access a variety of interactive services, including latest transport news and a journey planner. Other information available includes details of departures for tube, bus, light rail and river services, the ability to search for licensed taxi and private hire operators, and useful numbers and advice on fares and services. Some interactive elements will be charged at a 1p premium over the local telephone call rate.

Developed by interactive TV agency Press Red, the service provides an alternative to time travel information services available through existing platforms including online, mobile phones using WAP, call centre and broadcast bulletins. The two-year trial will be supported by significant joint marketing campaigns.

Chris Townsend of Transport for London said “Interactive TV is an increasingly important part of everyday life and represents a cost-effective new gateway that further strengthens our proposition to provide the latest travel information to our customers, anywhere, anytime.”
