The approval by the BBC Trust of Project Canvas was to be expected, but despite the long consultation and the detailed justification of the decision, the evident lack of real understanding of the issues involved remains a concern. The requirement to publish the specification is a positive development but there is no commitment that it will be an open standard, beyond being made available on a fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory basis. The insistence on mandating the user interface will limit those that wish to differentiate their products and services. The risk is that rather than unifying the industry, the new joint venture platform will fundamentally fragment an increasingly competitive market, which now operates in a global economy. Without all parties on board, Project Canvas needs strong leadership to make headway as it sets sail on stormy waters.
