The idea that television should be universally available through a rooftop antenna is still widely accepted in some markets but the medium to long-term future of terrestrial broadcasting is a matter of real debate. In Europe, there is now discussion about how to use terrestrial spectrum most effectively in coming decades. Broadcasters are already lining up to lobby for their allocation, but there will also be immense pressure to provide other forms of mobile broadband communications. There is an urgent need to consider the next generation of terrestrial audiovisual media reception technology. Basing it on the current digital broadcasting architecture may not be the best solution.
