Home shopping service QVC retired its red button service on Sky Interactive in Britain last week, while expanding its traditional television channels and extending them online, as customers are increasingly using the web or mobile apps to purchase items. The pioneering interactive television service was launched in 2000 and reportedly continued to generate sales but the associated costs were higher than other methods of ordering. It just goes to show that communications convergence does not always turn out the way people imagined. If you still want to buy Jennifer Aniston’s jumper there’s probably a better app for that. There’s no newsletter next week as it’s a public holiday for some people but we will have a report online from the Guardian Edinburgh International Television Festival.
