Sky has just delivered its first end-to-end live satellite coverage of a football match in ultra-high-definition, although only to an internal audience of executives and engineers. Nevertheless, it’s a further step towards commercial reality. So is UHDTV the next inevitable development of HD or will it fail to meet market expectations like 3D? At the annual IBC conference in Amsterdam later this month I’ll be chairing The Great Quality Debate, asking the question: ‘Do we really need to go beyond HD?’ Two teams of speakers will be responding to the motion: ‘This house resolves to go beyond high-definition to improve the fidelity of television’. Ultra-high-definition is likely to be one of the main talking points at IBC this year. If you’re attending the show, do come along to join the debate in the Forum at 11.00 on Saturday 14 September.
