The development and adoption of open standards has been of critical importance in the worlds of broadcasting and the internet. The success of hybrid services combining broadcast and broadband delivery will be no less dependent on the adoption of open standards. These will enable the rapid evolution of a diverse ecosystem. If one lesson can be learnt from the slow development of interactive television services to date it is that proprietary standards and fragmentation of the market have been barriers to growth, particularly when compared to the phenomenal development of the internet over the same period.
