This is the week of the NAB Show in Las Vegas and MIPTV in Cannes. While they generally attract different attendees, it is unhelpful that they are again taking place at the same time. Both NAB and MIPTV will have a special focus on 8K. While 4K ultra-high-definition is increasingly popular, with around 150 channels now live worldwide, 8K is already on air in Japan. It may be several years from wider deployment, although it is already being used in production for a number of special programmes. Meanwhile, the BBC has done a deal with Discovery. Is it resolving rights issues or simply selling the family silver?
