There have been numerous product announcements at IBC in Amsterdam, but few real breakthroughs. As expected, IPTV is prevalent on the exhibition floor as well as a hot topic of the conference. Microsoft is notable by its absence this year, with everyone still waiting to see it deploy its IPTV solution at any scale. Meanwhile, other suppliers in the ecosystem continue to push forward with their offerings. Interactive television is almost invisible in name, but there is a general assumption of a move towards more active use of media. Key players like OpenTV and NDS are taking the opportunity to envision new interfaces, but otherwise there is no radical re-evaluation of what television may become. Also absent are the online players and portals that could become the new networks of the future. There is much talk of mobile media, but some still seem sceptical about the scale of this opportunity.
