It may just be the fine weather over the weekend but there’s an optimistic mood at the IBC show in Amsterdam this year, although the cloud is clearly emerging over the horizon. The predominant themes are network connectivity, multiscreen delivery and second screen applications, reflecting a concern that the television screen no longer has our full attention. The cost of some kit is falling dramatically, as digital technology and increasingly sophisticated software mean higher technical quality and higher production values are ever more affordable and achievable for a broader range of producers. The temporary Connected World space has parasitically attached itself to the front of the host halls and will either slowly ingest the world of traditional broadcasters or spawn off its own event.
