This week, just in time for holiday viewing, the BBC is launching high-definition versions of five more channels, in addition to BBC One and Two. No news yet whether they will have the local news in high definition or whether there will still be the digital equivalent of The Potter’s Wheel interlude every evening in peak time for the more than half the country that now has high definition. Still, I was amused that the promotion for the press pack for programming for the festive period said “This content is not currently available for your device”. Good news, however, that the BBC is casting Ian Fletcher as Head of Values, following his success as Head of the Olympic Deliverance Commission. His task is to clarify, define, or re-define the core purpose of the BBC across all its functions and to position it confidently for the future. At least the comedy department hasn’t lost its sense of humour. So that’s all good.
