Online video distribution and on demand viewing are clearly growing rapidly, although not as fast as some might imagine. It’s slowly dawning that the internet will have the same disruptive effect on television as it has had on other media, with profound consequences for the structure of distribution businesses. This transformation is currently constrained by the capacity of networks and restrictive rights models based on traditional territorial distribution and release windowing. As a result there has been more geographic variation in the pace of change than so far seen with other media. Yet looking back, the transformation of television and video by digital technology over the last five, ten or twenty years has been extraordinary. Looking forward, it’s still difficult to predict the changes that we’ll see, but that’s exactly what we’re trying to do for now for informitv clients, envisioning not just a few years ahead, but the technologically inevitable future.
