10 years ago in our 2020 Vision, informitv predicted that displays will become resolution independent. Powerful media processors will provide real-time transcoding between different formats and resolutions on the fly, decoupling displays from specific broadcast standards. We see this today with 8K screens with intelligent upscaling, designed to make the most of lower resolution sources. The first 8K screens were large and expensive but Samsung has a 55-inch model that is a little more affordable. We can expect prices to fall further as higher definition displays become standard. The idea that you need to sit closer to the screen to appreciate the difference is a fallacy. The whole point is that you should not be able to see the pixels.
