The first phase of the digital revolution simply saw a transition from analogue to digital in media acquisition, post-production, transmission and reception. The next phase, let’s call it Digital Media 2.0, will result in the transformation beyond recognition of the conception, distribution and consumption of audio and video media. This has prompted the BBC to sign a ‘memorandum of understanding’ with Microsoft as the basis of a future ‘non-exclusive’ strategic alliance. This is a significant announcement, albeit without any apparent substance, which has received comparatively little coverage or comment in the mainstream media. More attention was give to the Microsoft Zune media player. Will it be the next iPod and will it do for video what Apple has done for music? As ever, we would be interested to receive your views.
