Movies, film, cinema — we use these words to describe certain forms of visual storytelling that confer higher status than mere television or video. They reference the theatrical experience, even if we watch them on smaller screens. Online distribution has opened up opportunities to tell more complex stories, with the ambition and production values of cinema but some of the features of episodic television. Online services have adopted the term ‘original’ to differentiate their own commissions and distinguish them from other series or serial dramas. What we are actually watching is a technical and cultural convergence of movies and television, which has played out over decades and will no doubt continue to run.
