William Gibson is observed that the future is already here — it’s just not very evenly distributed. That’s certainly true of broadband. As I write this from a broadband connection in rural England, a few hundred metres from a BT cabinet that’s yet to be connected by fibre, Speedtest reports an average download speed of 4.75Mbps and an upload speed of just 0.35Mbps. That’s just about enough for high-definition video. While some BT broadband customers may be able to benefit from its multi-billion pound investment in ultra-high-definition football coverage, for others it still seems like science fiction.
