Freeview figures reach five million households

Christmas sales have taken the number of Freeview households up to the five million milestone according to the latest figures.

The BBC estimates that 1.5m digital terrestrial receivers were sold in the UK in the in the three months up to 25 December, with sales reaching 190,000 a week in the run-up to Christmas.

3.9 million households had Freeview at the end of September 2004, according to Ofcom figures.

Taking into account that an estimated quarter of Freeview boxes and sets are bought for homes that have access to digital TV already, the latest sales estimates would indicate that about 1.1m homes were converted to digital terrestrial for the first time in the last three months of the year, bringing the total number of Freeview homes to five million.
